Chess Heights Southwest held on Saturday, February 3 at Maxton Suites, Maryland, Lagos. It had 40 male and 5 female players in attendance. Top rated players who showed up included Abdulrahman Abdulraheem, FM Abimbola Osunfuyi, IM Femi Balogun, CM Nonso Oragwu, FM Olamide Ajibowo, Tochukwu Akagha and Udeme Edet.
The most frequent winner of the event in recent years and the defending champion was also celebrating his birthday on that day, Young GM with real names being FM Abimbola Osunfuyi.
The event was a six round Swiss system affair. In round one, Isaac Okeke the under 16 whiz kid upset Sylvester Izokwu an experienced player. Apart from this all results were expected. In round two, IM Femi Balogun lost to Temitope Akande of University of Ibadan. This was the standout result of round two. Round three saw Femi Oyenowo of Unilag drawing outstanding master Abdulrahman Abdulraheem. Notably FM Olamide Ajibowo lost to Tochukwu Akagha while IM Femi Balogun continued to show rust with a draw with Robert Samuel. Round four saw only one shocker and it was huge, the most in form chess player in Nigeria FM Abimbola Osunfuyi lost to Udeme Edet, Vice President of CPAN. With this the drive for tournament winner was being decided. Round 5 saw Udeme giving a 1 point gap to the rest of the field with a win over co-leader Tochukwu Akagha. Young GM continued his shaky play with a draw against veteran FM Olamide Ajibowo. The final round, round six, saw a grandmaster draw between CM Nonso Oragwu and tournament leader Udeme Edet, Young GM lost again to Tochukwu Akagha.
Congrats to Udeme Edet for winning the first Chess Heights Southwest for 2018.
