SIX INVITATIONAL: DAY 1

Six Invitational : DAY 1

DAY 1

On the schedule of events, arrival was fixed for 9:00 a.m. and games were supposed to start 10:00 a.m, however the African timing thing surfaced and even the organizers arrived late. First player to arrive was Demola Sorungbe who is ChessHeights’ Mr. Efficient and last to arrive was Bayo Adegboyega who was coming from Ogun State. One thing that stood out was everyone’s appreciation of the quality of the venue as it was tastefully furnished, chilled and quiet.

The pairings for the 1st round were;

Bayo Adegboyega vs. Demola Sorungbe
Bunmi Olape
vs. Ajibola Olanrewaju
Charles Campbell
vs.
Tunji Rojugbokan

Even the veterans make mistakes; or perhaps it was the fact that Bayo was 30 minutes late, somehow Demola played white against the pairing order. But that didn’t save him from the 'Shaolin master' who defended with some fancy move order (started as french transposed to sicilian then back to french), and then seized the initiative when Demola missed a bishop sacrifice at move 18 that would have won the game for him. Bayo’s play from then on is a study in how to win a winning position, which can be quite difficult against a player of Demola’s class.

Game 2 of round 1 was quite shocking.  How does Bunmi ‘the undertaker’ Olape do it?
In a paltry 15 moves he forced
Ajibola to resign. The game was already over before the photographers could get round to taking their pictures. In the game, Ajibola defended with his favorite defense (The Petroff) and he was able to attain an inferior but playable position as at move 8. He must have lost concentration as his subsequent moves continued to be inferior culminating in a move 13, bishop takes knight on c3, blunder that lost the queen and of course the game.

As for game 3 of round 1, it was victory for local hero,
Tunji Rojugbokan of University of Lagos. He employed the Queens Indian against Campbell’s d4 and was able to seize the initiative at move 12. A series of poor decisions landed Campbell in a lost endgame where all his creative efforts to save the game were easily parried by Tunji.
