The story of July’s ‘Friends of Chess’ is now out. The July 2009, friends of chess took place at the (now permanent venue of the swan building in the national stadium, Surulere Lagos on the 11th July. A total of 76 players registered for the event with 70 actually showing up to play. (The heavy downpour in Lagos a few hours before the event did not help matters). The breakdown was 20 masters, 7 female and 43 opens players of which 14 were newcomers. Read More


 

71 ambitious teams, over 300 elite students and a full school year, September 2008 - May 2009; the Nigeria International Schools Chess League has for the 6th year running been the number 1 chess league in West Africa. That is not the intention of the organizers though; all they wish is to provide intellectually stimulating and character developing competition on a regular basis to school children whose minds are being groomed. Demola missed a bishop sacrifice at move 18 that would have won the game for him. Bayo’s play from then on is a study in how to win a winning position, which can be quite difficult against a player of Demola’s class. ChessHeights is at its impeccable wit again; co-organizing a classical tournament for some of Nigeria’s strongest chess players namely Adebayo Adegboyega, Charles Campbell, Bunmi Olape, Ajibola Olanrewaju, Tunji Rojugbokan and Demola Sorungbe. The Lagos State Sports Festival chess event took place form the 10th - 16th of November at the University of Lagos, Sports Complex. At the recently concluded Lagos State Sports Festival, Lagos Island East Local Government was entirely represented by students of Kings College. The just concluded 9th All African Games at Algiers has been described by the continental press as "having minor organizational problems but otherwise successful". Reports we gathered about the chess event however give us more details about this ‘minor’ organizational problems and the performance of our 12 representatives at the tournament. The July friends of chess rapid play took place at the Lafiagi community centre on the 7th of july 2007. Notable amongst the participants were Bomo Kigigha and Olanrewaju Ajibola fresh from the Kaduna training camp for the All African Games. UPDATE:
Sad to say that Nigeria drew 2-2 with Ethiopia in Round 8 and it was the two people that u would not have wished to be on the Receiving end of the drubbing that got it! Both kolade onabogun and Bunmi Olape lost. For those who are not aware, they were the only 2 Nigerians With a 100% win as it is now they were both on 3/4 as at the end of round 8. Read More


 

The 2007 All African Games Algiers, Algeria, began on the 11th of July and as we all know it's one of the few continental events that has Chess as a medal sport. Until yesterday it was virtually impossible to get any information on the proceedings (our apologies). The finals of the Nigerian International Schools Chess Championship League took place on Saturday, June 9, 2007 at Chrisland College, Idimu, Lagos. The concept behind the league is that the intellectual nature of chess is very useful for young children who are still developing. Nigeria, with the largest contingent had polytechnics from every zone in attendance. World University Chess Championship took place in Lagos, Nigeria from 28 August to 4 September 2006. It was organized for the 9th time; the previous edition of the Championship was organized in Istanbul, Turkey in 2002. It is a confluence of cultures, populated by Yoruba, Hausa, Fulani, Nupe, Baruba, Igbo, other Nigerians and foreign nationals.
