What a way to end
the year in chess. 14 rounds, the two colors against one opponent,
and plenty of bonus prizes along the way; the December 19th
‘Friends of Chess’ was a deeply rewarding experience even for those
that did not win prizes. In congruency with that experience, we are
presenting multiple reports in this news article. The first is from
Ayodele Abejide, the founder of the facebook group Nigeria Chess
Players Association, while the second is from the great organizer
himself Dasaolu Rotimi. We are pleased to bring this special treat

The tale of the
National Championship has comic elements. For different
reasons, its starting date was given thrice differently.
When it finally took place, chess players were faced with
high registration cost which included paying for an identity
card that many paid for the year before and didn’t receive.
Trust Nigerians, some chess players saw this barrier of cost
as an opportunity and registered in cheaper and less arduous
category with hopes for easier prizes.

Demola
missed a bishop sacrifice at move
18
that would have won the game for him.
Bayo’s
play from then on is a study in how to win a winning
position, which can be quite difficult against a player of
Demola’s
class. Bunmi, in
15
moves dispatched
Ajibola
and
Tunji's Queens Indian
was sufficient for a win against Campbell. These and more
from the first round of the game.
